CLAN GUNN of KINLOCHLAGGAN

the Alexander and Janet McKay Gunn

Family

Scroll

The following information is from "the GUNNs of Kinlochlaggan...A Scottish Diaspora" compiled and printed in 1979 by Kathleen Gunn Turpin (now Sullivan).

At the time Kathleen compiled our family's history and family tree information, it was determined that Hugh and Margaret were the ancestors of over 750 people, including 41 grandchildren and 91 great-grandchildren.  That was twenty years ago.  Since then there has been a whole new generation (possibly two) added to the trees.  Gary Rhyason, a cousin in Canada, is diligently working on up-dating the whole tree with the help of "Family Tree Maker".

As is mentioned elsewhere in the Homepage, if you have any information that can be added to the family tree or history, please let us know by email so that we can add it to these pages.

ALEXANDER GUNN (1821-1860) m. JANET McKAY (?-?)......

The family of Alexander Gunn remained in Bruce County, Ontario, after the other Gunn Families (except Donald Gunn) left for the Dakota Territory.

Alexander, who was killed May 29, 1860 at age 39, is buried at Baie De Dore Cemetery about two miles from Underwood (toward the lake) as are the Donald Gunns.  This cemetery is near the former communities of Malta and Port Bruce both of which were wiped out of existence in a fire on July 4, 1862.  The locality is now known as Baie De Dore.

Alexander's widow, Jane or Janet, was the daughter of Hector McKay of Zorra Township in Middlesex County who had moved to Lot 1, Concession 10, in Kincardine Township in about 1851.

After Alexander's death she remained a widow until marrying Finlay Hood -- also of Scottish birth -- in 1869.  They were parents of four children -- Finlay, George, John Angus, and Christian Marion ("Minnie").  Most of the descendants of the children of that marriage still reside in Ontario.
